Reports just filtering in have it
that the operations of Bristow Helicopters Limited’s Sikorsky S-76X++ type have
been suspended indefinitely by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
The
Helicopter fell into a high sea in Lagos on Wednesday, about
11 passengers on board, there was no record of any casualty, the activities of the company’s copter have been
suspended until further notice.
Daily
Trust reports that the ill-fated helicopter is the same as that which was
involved in a crash on August 12, 2015, in which six of the 12 passengers were
killed.
Captain
Mukhtar Usman, the Director General of NCAA, who spoke with newsmen at the
Murtala Mohammed International Airport annex of the NCAA, said it viewed“with utmost seriousness the successive
mishaps of Bristow Helicopters’ operating aircraft Sikorsky S- 76C++ on the
coastal waters of Lagos,” adding
that the suspension of operations of the company does not represent a vote
of no
confidence on the company but to
look out for adequacy and propriety of the operating aircraft type.
He said: “This
is not new in the industry, it is one of the Standard Operating Procedures
(SOP) all over the world.”
Reports
surfaced later in the day that the helicopters recently acquired by Governor
Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state for officials of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS)
aided in locating and rescuing crew members and passengers of a helicopter with registration number N5BQJ.
The RRS
helicopters are part of the security equipment recently purchased by the
governor at a cost of N4.7 billion, with the aim of beefing up security as well
as
